Two New York City men were arrested early Friday after they were caught stealing letters from a mailbox at the Freeport post office, police said.

Nassau County police detectives and U.S. Postal inspectors were conducting an investigation at the Merrick Road post office at 2:35 a.m. when they saw Kelvin Garcia, 19, of Brooklyn, and Marcos Camue, 18, of the Bronx, using an unspecified type of “fishing” tool to take the letters from the mailbox, police said.

Fishing tools such as poles, lines and/or sticky traps are used by thieves to steal letters from mailboxes.

The men were arrested at the scene “and several letters stolen from the mailbox were recovered,” police said in a news release.

Garcia and Camue were charged with four counts of first-degree criminal tampering, four counts of petit larceny, possession of burglary tools, and unlawful possession of personal identification, police said.

They were awaiting arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
