A man was struck by a car and killed Thursday night, May 18, 2017, as he pushed a shopping cart across Sunrise Highway in Copiague, Suffolk County police said. Credit: Stringer News Service

A man was struck by a car and killed as he pushed a shopping cart across Sunrise Highway Thursday night in Copiague, Suffolk County police said.

Police identified the victim as Constantino Tejada, 52, of Copiague. The driver remained at the scene.

Police said the incident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Sunrise and Bethpage Road.

The driver, identified by police as Luis Guzman Hernandez, 18, was not injured and was issued a summons for violation of his learner permit restriction. Under state law, a driver with a learner permit is only allowed to drive between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. when accompanied by a licensed driver over age 21. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. someone with a learner permit is not allowed to drive.

Police said that Guzman Hernandez was westbound on Sunrise Highway when he struck the victim with his 2005 Toyota Camry.

Tejada was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead.

The Toyota was impounded for a safety check.
