A Uniondale man has been charged with beating another man with a metal broomstick during a dispute over noise at a residence on Newport Road, police said.

Lemuel Stephens, 60, who lived at the residence, was arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead on assault and weapons possession charges, online court records show. He was also the subject of an outstanding warrant for traffic violations, police said.

The judge set bail at $75,000 cash or bond, and it was not immediately posted, according to the online court records.

Police said they went to the residence at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in response to a call about a disturbance and determined that Stephens had confronted the victim about noise, then hit him with the broomstick.

The victim of the assault, a 42-year-old man, was treated at a hospital for a cut to his left eye, police said.
