A 25-year-old man who was carjacked at gunpoint early Tuesday in Hempstead managed to escape by jumping from the moving vehicle, police said.

Nassau County police said the incident occurred at 2:50 a.m. as the man got into a gray 2003 Honda Accord on Fulton Avenue. Police said the driver was approached by a man who had a long ponytail and was wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt.

The man displayed a handgun and stole money from the victim, then forced the victim into the car and headed off. While the car was traveling along Cruikshank Avenue, police said the victim jumped from the car and fled.

The gunman drove off.

The car has New York plates D4H-3062, police said.
