Police: W. Babylon man driving at 'high rate of speed'
A West Babylon man was charged with drunken driving early Sunday morning after traveling at a high rate of speed and refusing to pull over for State Police on the Southern State Parkway, authorities said.
Javonne D. Mimms, 26, was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful fleeing a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, resisting arrest, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations, police said.
According to a State Police news release, the pursuit started at about 4:40 a.m. when troopers saw a 2017 Chrysler traveling south on Route 110 near the Southern State Parkway in the Town of Babylon “at a high rate of speed.”
State Police followed the vehicle onto the eastbound parkway and attempted to pull the Chrysler over, but Mimms failed to comply and started to flee east, the release said.
Troopers then followed the car to Exit 37N onto Belmont Avenue, where Mimms turned off onto westbound Pitcher Street, according to the release. Mimms then went south on Governor Avenue until he crashed into a fence and trees at the intersection with Lakeway Drive in West Babylon, the release said.
Mimms got out of the vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but was taken into custody, police said. An unknown passenger fled on foot.
State Police and Suffolk County police searched the area but could not find the passenger, the release said.
Mimms is to be arraigned in Suffolk County First District Court, but no arraignment date was immediately available.
State Police asked anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
