An 80-year-old woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a Hempstead street Tuesday night, police said.

Nassau County police homicide squad detectives said the vehicle was recovered a short time later by Hempstead police — parked on an undisclosed street in the community.

The recovered vehicle was impounded and police said forensics experts are examining recovered evidence.

The victim, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was transported from the scene on Washington Avenue at Nichols Court to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead more than two hours after the 8:53 p.m. accident, police said.

Police urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will remain confidential.
