Queens cop stable after off-duty stabbing
An off-duty NYPD officer was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday after being stabbed and left bleeding following an apparent push-in robbery at his home, police said.
The officer, whom police Commissioner Ray Kelly identified as Rishi Gobin, 34, lost consciousness but later was able to make a 911 call to report the attack, which took place at about 1 p.m., according to investigators.
Police said the break-in took place at Gobin's home in Jamaica and appears to have occurred while the officer's wife and children were not at home. Police are looking for at least one suspect and possibly two. Gobin, who neighbors said is from Trinidad, lives with his family on the second floor of a three-family house. People were at the dwelling on the first floor at the time of the robbery, police said.
Gobin was upgraded from serious condition after a laparoscopic exam found no vital organs had been injured in the stab wound to his right side.
Speaking at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Kelly said that Gobin is a four-year veteran of the force who works at the 42nd Precinct in the Bronx.
Jai Persaud, 52, who owns Reliable Auto Collision across the street from Gobin's home, said the wounded officer has been a client for years.
"He's a good person," Persaud said. "I'm hoping he's going to be OK because he has kids and he's a young guy."
Christopher Johnson, 17, said he had just walked out of a bodega when he heard a commotion and saw the victim chasing a man up Liberty Avenue near 170th Street for a half block until the man turned, stabbed his pursuer on the corner and ran up 170th.
"The cop fell on the floor but he was still moving," Johnson said. He said he also saw a second man run up the block.
Police said that Gobin had not been interviewed as of late Wednesday afternoon because of his medical condition.
