Two Queens women were charged after they attempted to cash money orders bought with fake $100 bills, Nassau County police said Wednesday.
According to detectives, Simone Brown, 21, of 109th Avenue, and Kristina Fontanez, 27, of 119th Road, used 27 fake $100 bills to buy four money orders from a Westbury post office on March 2.
The following day, Fontanez cashed two of the money orders, totaling $1,595, at a Carle Place post office. A few minutes later, police said, Brown also tried to cash additional money orders at the Carle Place post office, but an “astute employee became suspicious,” refused the transaction and notified police.
The duo also cashed $2,692 worth of money orders purchased with fake bills at a Brooklyn post office, police said.
Following an investigation, Fontanez was arrested Tuesday in front of her home. Brown surrendered to police Wednesday, according to police.
Brown and Fontanez are being charged with possession of a forged instrument and fourth-degree grand larceny, police said. They are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
