Riverhead woman faces Leandra’s Law charge, police say
A Riverhead woman violated Leandra’s Law on Thursday when she was driving drunk with her two daughters as passengers, Riverhead Town police said.
Prudence B. Williams, 43, was stopped on East Main Street in Riverhead at about 11:50 p.m. for a vehicle and traffic law infraction, police said.
Police found that Williams “was driving under the influence of alcohol” with her daughters, one 6 years old and the other 6 months old, in the vehicle.
She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at Riverhead Justice Court.
Under Leandra’s Law, passed in 2009, drivers who are intoxicated or impaired by drugs with a child 15 years or younger in the vehicle can be charged with a felony.
The law was passed after the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed Oct. 11, 2009, in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on West Side Highway in Manhattan.
