A substitute teacher has been arrested after “inappropriately touching” a student at Rocky Point High School, police said Friday.

Aimee Otero, 25, of Elm Avenue, Coram, was charged Thursday with third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Otero touched the 16-year-old male student in a classroom last month, and the teacher was arrested after the school district contacted authorities.

She was given a desk appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date, police said. Otero could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

Schools Superintendent Michael F. Ring said in a letter to parents that the school had “brought the matter to the attention of law enforcement.”

He said the teacher had been working as a substitute since November 2015 and had “passed all mandatory New York State background checks prior to employment.”

The substitute teacher “will no longer work for the district,” the letter said, adding that it would not provide additional information “because this is a criminal matter and the parties involved are entitled to privacy.”
