A Roosevelt man has been charged with menacing a 17-year-old by flashing a gun in his waistband at Roosevelt High School, Nassau County police said.
Eybin Umana, 40, faces multiple charges including menacing, illegal firearms possession and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
The incident happened Monday following a 6 p.m. argument on the high school's football field when, police said, a man threatened the 17-year-old student by displaying a gun he was carrying in his waistband.
The teen, "in fear for his life," ran away and called police; the suspect was last seen walking away from the school, heading south on Denton Place, police said.
Umana pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead and was released without bail, according to court records. No defense attorney was listed.
Roosevelt School District officials said Wednesday the confrontation took place after football practice and "outside of school hours, when no summer classes, athletic practices, or official activities were in session," adding there was no ongoing threat to students or schools.
"We are taking additional steps to strengthen after-hours security to prevent unauthorized use of facilities," Roosevelt superintendent Shawn Wightman said in a letter to families.
