Officers responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in arrested three men who they said were in the process of trying to break into a safe behind a building in Glen Cove on Wednesday.
Glen Cove police and Nassau County police said an investigation determined the safe, as well as items recovered during the arrests, were from a prior burglary — one that took place at about 6 p.m. Monday on Cornwells Road in Sands Point.
The men were arrested Wednesday at 6:31 p.m., police said.
Police identified the trio as Benjamin Hayt, 18, of Bedford Road, Port Washington; Elmer Mendez, 19, of Avenue A, Port Washington; and Jose Chevez, 36, of Glen Cove Avenue, Glen Cove.
The arrests were made behind Chevez’s residence.
All three were charged with second-degree criminal possession of stolen property and second-degree criminal mischief.
Additionally, police said, Hayt was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, and Mendez was charged with one count of third-degree burglary.
Chevez was not involved in the burglary in Sands Point, police said.
Police did not release details about the items recovered from the safe or details about that initial burglary.
All three men are scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
