The caretaker of a rental home in Southampton’s Shinnecock Hills has been charged with burglary after the tenant said he took some of her belongings, town police said Monday.

David Griffin, 52, of Middle Pond Road, Southampton, was charged with second-degree burglary following the Saturday night incident.

According to a news release, police received a call from the renter at 10:40 p.m. reporting that she had heard noises in the house when she returned home after going out. Police said that when she went to investigate she saw Griffin in the bushes and authorities later found that he had taken clothing from the property.

Southampton Town patrol officers and detectives along with a New York State Police K-9 Unit responded to the residence to search for the subject.

Bail was set at $1,000 cash following Griffin’s arraignment Monday in Southampton Town Justice Court.
