A Sayville man was charged Saturday night after stabbing a youth in the back on the beach at Smith Point County Park on Fire Island, Suffolk County police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Alexander Murphy, 18, was on the outer beach at 6:07 p.m. when he stabbed a 17-year-old from Selden in the back with a knife during an altercation, authorities said. Police declined to identify the victim because of his age.

Murphy was also taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Murphy was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip after being released from the hospital, police said.

Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to contact Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752.
