Some LIers applaud verdict in Conroy case

Jeffrey Conroy's conviction Monday in the hate-crime killing of Marcelo Lucero was supported by a sampling of Long Islanders. But some felt the anticipated sentence of eight to 25 years would be too short for the severity of the offense.
"I think he should get the death penalty for killing an innocent person just walking down the street like that," said Betty Wilcox, 75, of Baldwin, following the jury's conviction of Conroy, 19, of first-degree manslaughter as a hate crime for the death of the 37-year-old Ecuadorean immigrant in November 2008.
"The outcome was great," said Debbie Jones, 49, of Wyandanch.
Patrick Sheridan, 55, of Huntington, thought eight to 25 years was "not enough. I think he should have gotten more." Lucero "doesn't have a second chance. How about his family?"
But Jouquem Saulter, 17, of Huntington, thought the potential sentence was appropriate.
"Eight to 25 years in prison," he said, "is enough time for any crime."
