Drunken driver crashes minivan with son, 7, inside, say cops

A Southampton man was charged with violating Leandra’s Law after police said he drove a minivan while intoxicated on Saturday night, hit a utility pole and rolled the vehicle over with his 7-year-old son inside.

Vicente Zhunio, 47, suffered minor injuries and his son was not injured in the crash, which happened at about 11:39 p.m. on North Sea Road near Majors Path in Southampton, Southampton Town police said.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Zhunio’s 2002 Mazda MPV had rolled onto its driver’s side after hitting a pole.

Police said they determined Zhunio was intoxicated at the time of the crash, and his license had been revoked because of a prior DWI conviction. He also was required to have an interlock device on the vehicle, police said.

The two were taken to Southampton Hospital for evaluation. Zhunio was treated for minor injuries, while his son, who was not hurt, was released to a relative.

Zhunio was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle — a violation of Leandra’s Law — driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, endangering the welfare of a child and circumventing an interlock device.
