A Mastic Beach man was charged this week with misdemeanor animal cruelty after authorities found he had “severely” neglected his cocker spaniel, which required sedation for treatment of “severe matting” and “dental and eye issues,” the Suffolk County SPCA said Wednesday.

The dog was taken to the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter on Aug. 13, authorities said.

The SPCA said Paul Hatch, 41, charged on Sunday, is scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 24.

SPCA Chief Roy Gross warned that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County and the agency has asked anyone who witnesses animal cruelty or neglect to contact the SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will remain confidential.

CORRECTION: Hatch was given a field appearance ticket charging him with animal cruelty. A previous version of this story incorrectly said he was arrested.
