A national animal protection group has added $5,000 to the reward for information about a German shepherd found with its muzzle duct-taped shut April 9 in Lindenhurst.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Wednesday it has pledged $5,000 to the reward leading to the arrest and conviction of those in the case of the dog, which was rescued on Montauk Highway near South Sixth Street in Lindenhurst.

A Minnesota man has contributed $1,000 toward the reward, bringing the total to $8,000, according to the Suffolk County SPCA.

Howard Lawrence, a vice president with the ASPCA called it a “sickening case of animal cruelty.’

The “friendly” German shepherd was found abandoned after someone reported it to the Suffolk County SPCA on April 8, officials said. The dog is believed to be 2 or 3 years old.

The Suffolk County SPCA, which is offering $2,0000 toward the reward, said anyone with information can call 631- 382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
