A North Bay Shore woman has been charged with animal cruelty after her dog was found emaciated, dehydrated and covered with feces and urine in 2014, officials said Wednesday.

Shayna Staton, 32, of Prospect Place, was arrested by the Suffolk County SPCA on Monday, the agency said.

The male silky-Yorkshire terrier, named Bean, was found in a cage on the side of Candlewood Road in Brentwood in December 2014 covered in feces and urine and was extremely matted, the SPCA said.

“The dog was in really horrible condition,” said SPCA Chief Roy Gross. “It was life threatening.”

Gross said Bean was taken to a veterinary hospital where he was found to be emaciated and had open sores on its body. The dog’s weight was only 4.6 pounds and needed aggressive medical attention to save its life, Gross said.

Bean has since recovered and has been adopted by a Suffolk family that has asked not to be identified, Gross said.

Staton is scheduled to appear Oct. 18 in First District Court in Central Islip.
