Stony Brook University dorm search leads to student's arrest on drug charges

Suffolk and state police searching a Stony Brook University student's dorm room Monday discovered "methamphetamines, ketamine, and items used for drug sales" and arrested the 20-year-old man on drug charges, the authorities said.

William Turri was taken into custody after Suffolk police Narcotics Section detectives and Stony Brook University police executed a search warrant at 12:04 p.m. Monday for his room in the on-campus dormitory Mount Hall, according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release.

Turri, who is from upstate Fairport, near Rochester, was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia. He will be held overnight at the Suffolk police’s Sixth Precinct in Selden ahead of his arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

An investigation into Turri began after Suffolk police received "an anonymous Crimestoppers tip," Stony Brook University officials said, referring to the county police department's tip line.

"Stony Brook University maintains strict policies regarding illegal activity and campus safety," university officials said in an email via a spokesperson. "As is standard practice, the University works closely with law enforcement partners when necessary. Due to the ongoing legal process, we cannot comment on the specifics of this case."
