A Brooklyn man was arrested Saturday in Central Islip after he allegedly exchanged gunshots with a person in an SUV, Suffolk County police said.
Demetrius Williams, 39, was retrieving items from a parked vehicle on Hawthorne Avenue near Feller Drive at 6:10 a.m. when a gray SUV drove past him and someone inside fired two shots, striking Williams in the foot, police said in a news release. Williams then ran after the SUV and fired multiple shots at the vehicle, according to police.
Police responded to Hawthorne Avenue and found Williams trying to flee through an alleyway near an apartment complex, police said. He was arrested and taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Williams was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said. He was being held at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.
Police did not provide information about the SUV or the unknown person who shot Williams.
