Suffolk police arrested and charged a Central Islip man Wednesday after a weekend road rage altercation in Melville in which he allegedly choked another driver.

John Alston III, 50, and the other driver, a 41-year-old male, were both heading north on Broadhollow Road about 7:25 a.m. on Saturday when they "engaged in a verbal road rage altercation with each other," Suffolk police said in a news release late Wednesday.

After the two men pulled over, Alston allegedly assaulted the other motorist before driving away in a 2018 Kia Optima, according to the release.

The other man, who had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Express van, was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

Detectives from the Second Precinct in Huntington took Alston into custody in Huntington late Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Alston faces charges of second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault. He was being held overnight at the Second Precinct and is set for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
