A driver in a stolen sedan and an unmarked police vehicle crashed in Port Jefferson Station Tuesday afternoon, sending two detectives to the hospital, Suffolk police said.

Andrew Schneider, 18, of Port Jefferson Station, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

The detectives, who are from the First Precinct in West Babylon, were treated for minor injuries at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson and released, police said.

The detectives were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation at the Jefferson Plaza parking lot on Route 112, part of the Sixth Precinct in Selden, when the collision occurred just after 4 p.m., police said.

A photo from the scene showed a head-on crash.

Other details were not immediately available Tuesday from police, including whether the unmarked car was deliberately rammed and whether the detectives had followed the stolen car.

Police said the investigation continues.
