It looks fast and furious. And though the Suffolk County Police Department has declined to comment on its existence, a social media post by a Lindenhurst-based police department subcontractor flagged a newly shrink-wrapped Chevrolet Corvette, adorned with department logos, markings and colors, as the newest member of the police fleet.
Photos of the Corvette C8 were posted late Sunday by CMJ Enterprises LLC, showing off the mid-engine, targa-topped two-seat eighth-generation 'Vette, with a note that read: "Say hello to our little friend! Check out this Corvette recently wrapped by us for Suffolk PD!"
Contacted Monday by Newsday, a man who identified himself as the owner of CMJ, but who declined to give his name, told a reporter, "It was a cool project" — but said he was unauthorized to speak on the record about the car.
The wrap clearly states the vehicle was acquired via a DWI seizure, and a decaled message on the rear window reads, "DWI SEIZURE," followed by: "Seized Under Suffolk County Local DWI Law."
It was unclear if such vehicles are approved for department patrol units or if the car will be used as a promotional tool in some sort of anti-drunk-driving campaign.
A police spokesperson on Monday said only that an announcement about any new vehicle and its intended use would be forthcoming at a later date.
While the year and model number of the seized Corvette are not known, the eighth-generation Corvette, the first mid-engine model in a lineup first introduced by Chevrolet back in 1953, debuted in 2020.
Prices and horsepower and top speeds vary greatly depending on the version, equipment and options.
The horsepower on C8s range from about 490 horsepower for the base model to 1,250 horsepower for the ZR1X. Chevrolet claims the 0 to 60 mph acceleration can be as quick as 2.3 seconds – with a top speed of 233 mph.
Used Corvette C8 models can be found online through Carfax with prices ranging from about $60,000 to $120,000.
While many U.S. police departments use specially outfitted "police interceptor" packaged factory vehicles like Dodge Chargers and Ford Explorers, it is rare for police departments in the U.S. to use true sports cars — or, exotic cars — as patrol and pursuit units.
Other countries, however, do use a handful of exotic vehicles for law enforcement activities.
The BBC TV show "Top Gear" made a list of the 45 best cop cars in the world and lists of exotic cars in use abroad that can be found on a variety of websites.
The highest-end exotics are in use in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, and in Dubai, also in the UAE.
Cars in the police fleet in Dubai include a Bugatti Veyron, an 8-litre quad-turbocharged street-legal roadster with a top speed of 254 mph — and a price tag often well north of $1.5 million. Other exotics used in Dubai include: Lamborghini Aventadors, an Aston Martin One-77, a McLaren Artura, a V-12 powered four-seat Ferrari FF, a BMW i8 and a 900-horsepower electric Lotus Eletre R.
