Suffolk police: Man found dead in North Bay Shore a homicide victim

The death of a man whose body was found Wednesday in a wooded area near a residential street in North Bay Shore is being investigated as a homicide, Suffolk County police said.

Police officers from the Third Precinct responded to the scene near a home on New York Avenue just before 5 p.m. after two neighbors separately arrived home from work and discovered blood in the street. said Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, commanding officer of the Homicide Squad, at the scene about 10:30 p.m.

One of the residents found the man's body on the south side of the street "tucked into the brush," Beyrer added.

Although the man's death is being treated as a homicide, detectives have not yet determined how he died, Beyrer said, adding that it appeared the man was killed in the street.

Additional details, including the man's identity and age, were not immediately available but "we believe we know who the person is," Beyrer said. "This investigation is very early."

How the then-wounded man ended up in the brush along the south side of New York Avenue remained unknown, according to the detective lieutenant.

"We're processing the scene, and all we can say is there's a significant amount of blood," Beyrer said. "The body is in the woods, so we can't say specifically until we remove the body, take him to the medical examiner's office."
