Super Bowl weekend crackdown on drunken drivers begins Saturday

New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on drunken and impaired driving during the Super Bowl weekend, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Thursday.
The statewide crackdown — a STOP-DWI campaign — runs from 2 p.m. Saturday until midnight Sunday, the governor’s office said in a news release.
Increased patrols will be looking for underage drinkers and will set up sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers, according to a news release.
“State Police will be out in force to help ensure New Yorkers have a safe Super Bowl weekend,” Cuomo said in the release.
Cuomo said there is “zero tolerance for impaired and reckless driving.”
An impaired-driving conviction carries a maximum fine of $10,000, up to 7 years in prison and license revocation.
The campaign will be promoted on various message boards on highways across the state, including the New York State Thruway.
