Suspect arraigned in shootout with 4 NYPD cops

Capt. Al Pizzano, 45, of Smithtown, left and Matthew Granahan, 35, of Nesconset were treated and released from the hospital after being injured in a shootout in Brooklyn Saturday night.
A Brooklyn man wounded in a shootout with NYPD cops on Easter Sunday was arraigned Wednesday from his hospital bed on seven counts of attempted murder of police officers and other charges, officials said.
Nakwon Foxworth, 33, was shot in the abdomen after he allegedly started firing at the officers inside his apartment, at 3301 Nostrand Ave., with a 9-mm handgun.
He entered a plea of not guilty to the various charges at Kings County Hospital Center, said a spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
According to investigators, shots fired by Foxworth wounded four NYPD officers, including two from Long Island. Capt. Al Pizzano, 49, of Smithtown, was grazed in the face, and Officer Matthew Granahan, 35, of Nesconset, wounded in the calf. Both Pizzano and Granahan were treated and released the day of the shooting. Two others, Dets. Mike Keenan and Kenneth Ayala, were hospitalized for wounds but have since been released.
In addition to the attempted murder charges involving the four wounded officers, the indictment includes similar charges involving three unharmed cops who were apparently in danger from Foxworth's gunfire.
Officers had initially arrived at the Nostrand Avenue building after receiving reports that Foxworth, who was discovered to have had a small arsenal of weapons in his apartment, menaced some moving men with a handgun.
Foxworth also was accused of trying to hold his girlfriend and the couple's 4-month-old child hostage just before the shootout started. The girlfriend fled the apartment with the child before the shooting started.
The indictment issued last week by the grand jury charged Foxworth with attempted murder in the first degree, attempted aggravated murder and murder in the second degree, attempted assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful imprisonment and other offenses.
