Suffolk police detectives are investigating a robbery in North Lindenhurst Sunday night in which a teenager confronted the suspect before a gunshot was fired, police said.

A 17-year-old resident of a North Jefferson Avenue home saw a man exiting his house with a metal lock box about 7:35 p.m. and confronted him, police said. A struggle ensued and the gun-wielding suspect fired one shot into the ground.

After the teen backed away, the suspect - described as a male about 6 feet tall with a stocky build - fled north on Jefferson Avenue toward Sunrise Highway, police said.

An undetermined amount of cash stolen from the box was recovered on Jefferson Avenue.

Police ask that anyone with information regarding this case call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential.
