A Freeport man was charged Friday in the street robbery of a teen, police said.

According to detectives, the 14-year-old victim was walking with a friend on Pine Street and Washington Avenue in Freeport at about 2:30 p.m. when he was chased by a group of men, one of whom struck the victim with a golf club and knocked him to the ground.

The men stole the victim’s cellphone and wallet and fled on foot.

While reporting the crime later that day at the Freeport police station, the victim saw one of his alleged assailants, Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella, 22, who was at the station to report an unrelated incident, police said.

Martinez-Estrella, of West Merrick Road, was arrested at 5:48 p.m. and charged with first-degree robbery, police said.

Online court records show Martinez-Estrella was arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead before Judge Joy Watson, who issued a temporary order of protection and set bail at $25,000 cash or bond.
