Three sex offenders violated conditions on Halloween, officials say

Three Long Island registered sex offenders were taken into custody for violating special conditions that apply on Halloween, officials said.

Two of them were Suffolk residents and one lived in Nassau, a spokeswoman with New York State Corrections and Community Supervision said on Tuesday.

To keep children safe on one of their most popular holidays, parole officers contact about 3,000 registered sex offenders in the state. These offenders are barred from handing out candy or playing any other “trick or treat” role, including wearing a mask or costume.

Yet a check on a Long Island offender turned up a child’s cat costume, a “Beauty and the Beast” DVD, crayons and a set of bolt cutters, all items sex offenders are prohibited from having, according to FIOS1, which accompanied patrol officers.

On Halloween, registered sex offenders also cannot leave their homes once they finish work or community programs until 6 a.m. the next day.

As a matter of policy, the agency declined to release any further details.

“We don’t identify individuals by towns for the safety of everyone,” an agency spokesman said.

Nor could he detail what sorts of violations were discovered,

“Most of the time. it’s just possessions or curfew violations or violations of the special conditions,” he added.
