Henry Schein credit supervisor sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for embezzling $1.6M from Melville company

A former credit supervisor for a Melville-based medical supplier was sentenced on Thursday to 2 1/2 years imprisonment and ordered to pay restitution after he admitted embezzling $1.6 million from the company, federal officials said.

Tony Ream, 35, of Greenville, South Carolina, was sentenced in federal court after he admitted moving company funds to an account he controlled through wire transfers, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella for the Eastern District of New York. He spent the funds on his wedding, luxurious overseas vacations and "a failed restaurant venture in South Carolina," the release said.

"The defendant profited by abusing the trust placed in him by his employer, but his lies and crimes caught up with him," Nocella said in the release. "Today’s prison sentence gives the defendant ample time to reflect on his bad choices and how he will pay back the money he stole."

While neither the release nor court documents identified the impacted company by name, Newsday previously confirmed Ream stole from Henry Schein.

A spokesperson for the global medical and dental supply firm declined to comment on Ream's sentencing on Thursday afternoon.

Raymond C. Baierlein, the defense attorney representing Ream, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

Ream began working for Henry Schein in 2019 in its credit department before becoming a credit supervisor. Between October 2020 and November 2024, he orchestrated various wire transfers totaling about $1.6 million from company accounts designated for customer refunds and fraudulently recorded each theft as such transactions. He also "deceived his subordinates into unwittingly taking steps that facilitated his embezzlement scheme," the U.S. attorney’s release said.

Ream pleaded guilty to wire fraud nearly one year ago on Sept. 25, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Sanket J. Bulsara in Central Islip, Newsday reported at the time. Bulsara sentenced him Thursday to 30 months in federal prison and ordered him to repay $1.6 million to Henry Schein, plus a $1,000 fine.
