Tougher protection order in beating case

An order of protection against a retired Hempstead police detective who's charged with tailing and then beating his wife got more restrictive Friday morning.
William Fowlkes, 47, is accused of punching and kicking his wife, New York Police Department Deputy Inspector Juanita Holmes, breaking two of her ribs. He had followed her to the Islip home of another NYPD detective, police said. He's now charged with misdemeanor assault.
At the request of Suffolk Prosecutor Julie Walsh, District Court Judge G. Ann Spelman modified the order of protection to order Fowlkes to stay away from her home and workplace and not to contact her.
Defense attorney Stephen LaMagna of Garden City said his client needed to go to the house to get some clothing and financial information for his taxes. Spelman said he could have a small amount of time to go if he arranged to do it when Holmes wasn't there.
Fowlkes, of Baldwin, is accused of assaulting his wife, the commanding officer of a Brooklyn police precinct, on March 21 in Baywood, an Islip hamlet, police said.
