Traffic stop leads to DWI, illegal fireworks arrest, state cops say

A traffic stop on a speeding car Sunday afternoon on the Wantagh State Parkway led to the driver’s arrest not only for felony DWI, but also for possession of illegal fireworks and vehicle and traffic law violations, state police said.
Police said Nicholas Maggio, 27, Seaford, was arrested following the stop of his gray Honda on the southbound Wantagh near Sunrise Highway at about 1 p.m. The car was clocked at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said. Police said the trooper who stopped Maggio “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” while conducting his interview — and said the trooper also “noticed that the vehicle was filled with fireworks.”
Police said Maggio failed field sobriety tests.
They said Maggio has a prior DWI conviction within the past 10 years and was charged Sunday with felony DWI.
He also was charged with fireworks possession and issued traffic tickets.
Maggio was scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
