A Freeport man who authorities said was driving a stolen sport utility vehicle linked to a Virginia homicide and had a loaded assault rifle was arraigned Sunday in Hempstead.
Tremain Wilson, 36, was remanded in Nassau District Court without bail.
Wilson, a suspect in a Virginia homicide, was driving the sport utility vehicle about 4:15 p.m. Friday near Pennsylvania Avenue and Wilson Place, authorities said.
Freeport police had pulled Wilson over on New Year’s Day after an automatic license plate reader showed the 2001 Chevy Tahoe he was driving was reported stolen, police said. The vehicle had been reported stolen Dec. 14, court papers said.
They also discovered a Hempstead Village warrant had been issued for Wilson’s arrest after he had failed to appear in Hempstead Village Court on May 4, 2012, to answer a charge of driving with a suspended license.
A loaded M4 assault rifle was discovered in the SUV, Nassau County police said.
Wilson was charged Sunday with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon along with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. He is due in Hempstead Village Court on Wednesday and felony court in Mineola that same day. It was not clear when or if he was to be extradited to Virginia.
Wilson did not enter a plea and said nothing in court Sunday and neither did his court-appointed lawyer.
