A Uniondale teenager was taken into custody early Sunday morning after Nassau police responded to a shots-fired call in East Garden City and found the boy carrying a handgun in his backpack, authorities said.

A 911 call reporting shots fired during a “disturbance” on Stewart Avenue in East Garden City came in at about 2:10 a.m., Nassau police said.

Responding officers saw a male who fit the description of someone involved in the disturbance running westbound toward Ring Road, police said.

The suspect was stopped and after an investigation, Akeem Chambers, 16, of Nostrand Avenue, was placed under arrest, police said. A black 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was recovered in Chambers’ backpack, police said.

A police spokeswoman said she had no information on the nature of the reported dispute.

Chambers faces charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm. He is scheduled for arraignment on Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
