W. Hempstead man charged with biting officer at jail
A West Hempstead man who went to the Nassau County Jail to visit an inmate Thursday ended up behind bars himself after he bit a correction officer on the hand, police said.
Sharrief Yelverton, 31, of 557 Lincoln Ave., was arrested just after 5 p.m. and charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and criminal trespass, Nassau County police said. He was scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said the incident began when Yelverton argued with the correction officer at gatehouse No. 1 on the perimeter of the jail, which is on Carman Avenue in East Meadow.
Detectives said Yelverton did not follow directions given by the correction officer, pushing the officer when told to leave the property.
As the officer tried to arrest Yelverton, the man bit him on the hand, police said. The officer was treated at a hospital.
