A New Jersey man was arrested and charged with illegal surveillance after police said a female tenant found a camera in the bathroom of her rented residence in Water Mill early Saturday.

Southampton Town police said the incident was reported at about 1:30 a.m., but provided no details on the property's location.

Police said that following an investigation, detectives arrested James Bassett-Cann, 36, of Stockton, New Jersey, charging him with second-degree unlawful surveillance. He is scheduled for arraignment in Town of Southampton Justice Court at a later date.

It was not immediately clear how Bassett-Cann is tied to the property, or how he might be known to the victim. It also was not clear if Bassett-Cann is represented by counsel.

Police did not immediately respond to additional questions regarding the incident, but are asking anyone with information regarding this or similar incidents to contact detectives at 631-702-2230.
