Nassau County police charged a West Hempstead man Sunday afternoon after, they said, he set a car on fire that belonged to a woman with whom he had a dispute.

Donald Ferrus, 26, was arrested just a mile away from the fire police said he set Friday morning on Melvin Avenue in Lakeview.

Ferrus threw an accelerant on a 22-year-old woman’s car and set it on fire, causing extensive damage to the vehicle, police said. Ferrus allegedly then fled north on Janus Lane. Ferrus and the victim had an ongoing dispute, police said.

Ferrus was charged with third-degree arson. He will be arraigned on Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
