Salvatore Sassone, of Westbury, charged in crash that killed pedestrian on Northern Boulevard, NYPD says

A Westbury man faces multiple charges after he fatally struck a pedestrian in Queens while driving without a license, the NYPD said.

The NYPD arrested Salvatore Sassone, 48, on Monday and charged him with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license in the June 11 incident.

That night, police responded to a 911 call reporting a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Police determined that Eric Wexler, 74, of Queens, was crossing Northern Boulevard near 217th Street in Bayside, just west of the Cross Island Parkway, when he was struck by an eastbound 2017 Chevy Tahoe, the NYPD said.

Wexler sustained head and body trauma and was taken by EMS to North Shore Manhasset Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Sassone, the driver of the Chevy, remained on the scene, police said. It was not immediately clear why it took the police until Monday to arrest him.

Sassone received a desk appearance ticket with an arraignment date of Dec. 11, according to the Queens District Attorney's Office.
