Westbury man robbed at gunpoint on walk home, police say

A Hicksville man was arrested on robbery and other charges after putting a gun to a victim’s head and stealing money as he walked to his Westbury home, police said.

Alberto Alvarez, 25, of West John Street, and an accomplice approached their victim, a 35-year-old man, who was walking home from work just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said. As the victim approached his home on Broadway, Alvarez and the other suspect put a handgun up to the victim’s head and demanded money, police said in a news release.

After getting about $500 from the victim, whose name was not released, Alvarez and his accomplice fled the scene, police said.

The second suspect has yet to be arrested, police said.

The detectives’ investigation led them to identify Alvarez as a suspect and he was arrested at his home on Friday evening at 11:40 p.m., police said.

Alvarez is being charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, police said, in addition to an unrelated charge of fourth-degree grand larceny in connection with property recovered from his home.

He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday and held on $75,000 cash or $75,000 bond, according to online court records. Attorney information was not immediately available.
