Suffolk police investigators study the location in Brentwood where an 81-year-old woman from Ecuador visiting family on Long Island was struck and killed early Thursday by a hit-and-run driver. Credit: James Carbone

An 81-year-old woman from Ecuador, who was on Long Island to visit family, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning in Brentwood, Suffolk County police said.

The victim, identified by police as Maria Carmelina Arroba Gavilanez, was walking along Ferris Avenue, near the intersection of O’Rourke Street, when she was hit at 7:16 a.m.

Police said the vehicle, possibly light-colored, then drove off eastbound on O’Rourke.

Gavilanez was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office, police said.

Detectives from the vehicular crime unit responded and are investigating the crash. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call major case unit investigators at 631-852-6555 or Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
