Police: Private schoolteacher repeatedly raped student

A Woodmere private schoolteacher has been charged with raping a student with whom he had illegal sexual relations for nearly three years, police said Friday.
Daniel McMenamin, 33, of Valley Stream, who teaches at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, first began assaulting the student when she was 14 years old in November 2014, Nassau County police said.
The “numerous acts of sexual conduct” continued until July 2017, the police said.
McMenamin was charged with three counts of second-degree rape, three counts of second-degree criminal sex act, 24 counts of third-degree rape, 24 counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
School administrators could not be reached for comment.
William Jaye, a Westbury-based attorney representing McMenamin, said his client denies the charges.
"There’s more to the story than is being told," he said.
McMenamin appeared in Nassau First District Court on Friday. Judge Maxine Broderick issued an order of protection and set bail at $280,000 bond or $140,000 cash, which McMenamin had not posted by Friday afternoon, according to court records. He is due back in court on Tuesday.
