Wyandanch man had 28 license suspensions, cops say
A Wyandanch man pulled over in Oakdale for speeding Saturday night was charged with driving with a suspended license — and found to have had 28 prior license suspensions, Suffolk County police said.
Suffolk Highway Patrol Officer Zacarias Alvarado observed a 2003 Red Ford Mustang traveling east on Sunrise Highway at “a high rate of speed” near Exit 49 in Oakdale at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Alvarado pulled the car over and ran a check on the driver’s license of Walter Cowans Jr., 37, of Hickory Street, police said. It was found that Cowans was driving with a suspended license and that had been suspended 28 times dating to October 2001, police said.
Cowans was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree, a misdemeanor, and was issued a summons for speeding.
He was taken to the Fifth Precinct and was released on bail, police said, and will be arraigned at a later date.
