A 40-year-old man was shot in the cheek Friday in Wyandanch after a group of teenagers were in a fight and adults arrived on the scene, Suffolk County police said.

The teens were fighting on Jamaica Avenue between 32nd and 31st streets at about 2:05 p.m. when family members of the teens arrived and a man shot the victim, police said.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and is expected to survive, police said. No arrests were made.

Katrina Clayton, 40, who lives where the shooting happened, said the injured man tried to intervene during the fight.

"I see him trying to diffuse the situation and he got shot," Clayton said, adding she heard seven to eight shots fired.

Nearby Wyandanch Memorial High School will not play its home football game that had been scheduled for Saturday, officials said.

"Due to safety concerns within the Wyandanch School District the school announced it would not play its Suffolk Division IV football game against Port Jefferson," said Tom Combs the executive director for Section XI, which governs public school athletics in Suffolk. "Wyandanch was to host Port Jefferson in the regular-season finale. Port Jefferson will be awarded a forfeit."
