Wyandanch woman pleads guilty in jail contraband case

One of three women arrested in February in an alleged contraband smuggling scheme at Nassau’s jail pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Sharonda Hall, 25, of Wyandanch, admitted in a Mineola courtroom to a misdemeanor count of promoting prison contraband, according to court records.

Authorities have alleged a nurse who had worked for the jail’s private medical contractor, Armor Correctional Health Services, smuggled razors and synthetic marijuana — or K2 — to inmates in a scheme that also involved Hall and another woman.

The Nassau district attorney’s office had said Hall and Amanda Minnieer, 28, of Baldwin, would pick up cash at a money wiring store, use it to buy contraband and turn over items to the nurse — who was paid to sneak items to inmates while doling out medication.

Court records show a judge in May sentenced Minnieer to 6 months in jail and five years of probation after she admitted to a felony contraband count involving smuggling K2 and lighters into the jail.

Hall’s attorney, Mitchell Barnett, said Tuesday that his client admitted to passing along K2 and said “it was in the best interests of all parties to go ahead with the plea.”

A judge said she would sentence Hall in January to three years of probation, Barnett said.

Authorities said the case against nurse Chantiel Cox, 26, remains pending. She has previously denied the allegations through her attorney.
