Long Island watersheds may be eligible for state grants to reduce flooding and improve habitat with a focus on two rare species — American eels and river herring, officials said Friday.

The grants, totaling $375,000, can pay for such projects as removing dams near tidal waters and improving habitats by re-opening tributary steams.

Most of the projects must be able to withstand a 100-year flood, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement.

Long Island Sound watershed, the Peconic and South Shore estuaries, and Jamaica Bay can compete for the DEC’s Marine Habitat Tributary Restoration and Resiliency grants, the agency said.

The grants range in size from $10,500 to the full $375,000.

Other possible projects include building fish ladders and installing new culverts, the DEC said.

The deadline to apply is April 18, with the money awarded this summer. The grants team can be reached at 518-474-5595 or GrantsReform@its.ny.gov.
