Delayed LIRR train a 'nightmare' after man struck on track

About 350 passengers aboard a Manhattan-bound Long Island Rail Road train on the Port Jefferson line were stuck for nearly two hours Sunday after it struck a man and police investigated, officials said.

At about 4:20 p.m. the train, which was headed from Huntington to Penn Station, hit a male trespasser on the tracks just west of the Queens Village station, LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said.

LIRR officials suspended service on the Port Jefferson line for about an hour between Queens Village and New Hyde Park, and passengers remained aboard the affected train for nearly two hours as authorities interviewed the conductor and passengers. The condition of the man was unknown late Sunday, Arena said, adding that service was back to normal by 6:30 p.m.

Passenger Clayton Collier described the delay as a "nightmare." Collier, a journalism student at Seton Hall University, said crew members distributed water to passengers and offered medical assistance to anyone who needed it.
