Delays on LIRR Port Washington branch after investigation on tracks
Rail service on the Port Washington branch was temporarily suspended Wednesday evening as police investigated a possible trespasser on the tracks in Queens, a Long Island Rail Road official said.
Service resumed just before 8 p.m., but the LIRR said passengers should expect residual delays.
The delays started when crew members on the 6:44 p.m. train from Great Neck to Penn Station saw someone emerge from the woods just east of Auburndale and run onto the tracks, said LIRR spokeswoman Marjorie Anders.
The train stopped, and MTA police looked around the tracks for signs of a person or a "strike," but found neither, she said.
Delays led to the cancellation of the 7:39 p.m. train from Port Washington to Penn, LIRR said.
The 7:27 p.m. train from Penn Station to Port Washington was expected to be up to 19 minutes late, the railroad said, while the 6:44 p.m. train from Great Neck was expected to arrive at Penn Station 63 minutes late.
