The Democratic Party added more members than the GOP in both Long Island counties since Jan. 1, reflecting a long-term trend, the latest enrollment tallies show.

In Nassau, the Democrats expanded their overall voter-registration advantage over Republicans to 33,031. There are 358,198 Democrats and 325,167 Republicans.

In Suffolk, Republicans still outnumber Democrats, 301,206 to 296,047. But that's by less than before, for a GOP edge of 5,159 voters, compared with 31,423 during the 2008 presidential election.

In three of five western Suffolk towns -- Babylon, Huntington and Islip -- and in East Hampton, Democrats have inched ahead of the GOP. On tiny Shelter Island, Republicans outnumber Democrats by a single voter, 771 to 770. -- Rick Brand
