Demonstrators at St. Agnes call for bishop to resign
About 10 demonstrators spent Easter morning outside St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, calling for Bishop William Murphy to resign.
The demonstrators, some of whom were members of a group that advocates for sex abuse victims, accused Murphy of shielding clergy members who have been implicated. Some held signs - one said "Sexual abuse of little boys and girls is soul murder" - and handed out literature.
"Why were they covering up the sexual abuse of children to promote the image of the church?" said one demonstrator Tim Walsh of Huntington.
Attempts to reach a diocese spokesman were not immediately successful.
